Overview

Goryōkaku is Japan's first Western-style fortress, constructed in the shape of a five-pointed star to maximize defensive angles for cannon fire. Built in the 1860s by the Tokugawa Shogunate, it served as the final stronghold for the Republic of Ezo during the Boshin War. The site spans 25 hectares and currently functions as a public park managed by the city of Hakodate. The star-shaped moat is enclosed by earth ramparts that provide elevated walking paths around the perimeter. At its center stands the reconstructed Magistrate's Office, restored using traditional techniques to replicate the original government headquarters. Over 1,500 cherry trees are planted throughout the grounds, making it a prominent destination for hanami viewing. The adjacent Goryōkaku Tower provides an aerial perspective of the star-shaped fortifications.
