Overview

Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS) is an anthropologic museum spanning 200 acres across the hilly landscape of Bhopal. It is one of the few museums globally that showcases the evolution of man and culture through massive open-air exhibits featuring life-sized tribal dwellings. The museum grounds include extensive outdoor displays of traditional architecture relocated from various Indian states, including bamboo huts and stone shelters. Indoor galleries house prehistoric rock art replicas, tribal tools, and ethnographic collections. The site emphasizes the integration of human history with the natural environment. It serves as an open-air archive for disappearing cultural practices and folk arts of indigenous communities. The museum is located on the undulating terrain of Shamla Hills, overlooking the Upper Lake.
