Overview

Vorderer Gosausee is an alpine lake in Upper Austria located at the foot of the Dachstein glacier. The lake is fed by glacial meltwater, resulting in exceptionally clear water with high visibility. A level, paved path encircles the entire lake, suitable for most fitness levels. The Gosaukamm cable car station is situated at the northern end of the lake, providing access to higher elevation trails. The surrounding geology consists of Dachstein limestone, which characterizes the jagged peaks of the Gosaukamm range visible from the water. Due to its location in the Salzkammergut region, the site is prone to rapid weather changes even during summer months.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker or layered clothing, as temperatures drop significantly when the sun dips behind the Gosaukamm peaks.

Start the lake circuit early to avoid peak crowds arriving via tourist buses.

Check the local mountain weather forecast specifically for the Dachstein massif, not just the regional valley forecast.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb the steep rock faces surrounding the lake without proper mountaineering gear and experience.

Good to know

The Gosaukamm cable car typically ceases operations during the off-season transition periods in late autumn and spring.

Etiquette

Swimming is permitted, but visitors are expected to maintain silence and refrain from disturbing local wildlife.
