Overview

Porta Cristina is a historic 19th-century gate located at the main entry point to the Castello district in Cagliari. Constructed in 1825 by order of King Carlo Felice, it was named in honor of his wife, Queen Maria Cristina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. The gate features a neoclassical design with a single archway flanked by two smaller lateral pedestrian paths. It was built to facilitate easier access to the elevated citadel than the older, medieval gates provided. The gate's construction necessitated the modification of the historic Pisan walls. It serves as a primary pedestrian transition point between the urban sprawl of the lower city and the hilltop fortified quarter. The structure is built from white limestone, consistent with many historical buildings in the area.
