Overview

Sumendu Lake serves as the centerpiece of Mirik, a hill station situated in the Darjeeling district at an altitude of approximately 1,767 meters. The water body is flanked by a 3.5-kilometer-long perimeter path that allows for a complete circuit of the lake. An 80-foot arched footbridge, known as the Indreni Bridge, spans the lake and connects the two banks. The lake is surrounded by pine forests and provides views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range on clear days. Boating facilities are provided for visitors within the lake's boundaries. A garden called Krishnanagar is located on one side of the lake, featuring a variety of seasonal flowers. The surrounding area remains a protected zone to maintain the local ecology.

Insider tips

Carry a light jacket as temperatures drop significantly once the sun sets behind the hills.

Walk the full perimeter path early in the morning to see the mist lifting off the water surface.

Wear comfortable, non-slip footwear suitable for walking on paved but uneven lakeside paths.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim in the lake, as it is strictly prohibited for safety and environmental conservation reasons.

Good to know
