The structure was designed to handle large commercial barges that were previously too wide for the standard locks.

4

It was effectively rendered obsolete for commercial traffic in 2009 following a mechanical failure and changes in canal logistics.

5

The visitor center occupies the original control building, offering views of the massive machinery and the canal junction.

Overview

The Montech Water Slope is a unique hydraulic engineering structure designed to bypass five locks on the Canal de Garonne. Completed in 1974, it uses a concrete ramp and a massive mobile gate to transport boats up or down the slope by pushing a wedge of water. The mechanism eliminates the lengthy passage through traditional locks, saving approximately 45 minutes of transit time. The site features an interactive visitor center detailing the technical history of the Pente d'Eau. It remains one of the few examples of this specific type of navigation technology globally. The original diesel engines powering the equipment have been preserved for exhibition.
