It is the largest brick arch bridge in Japan.
The name 'Megane' translates to 'glasses' due to the appearance of its four arches.
The original railway line utilized a rack-and-pinion system (Abt system) to navigate the extreme gradient.
The bricks were imported from the local area but fired using specialized techniques to ensure durability against mountain weather.
The structure survived several major earthquakes, demonstrating the structural integrity of its 19th-century engineering.
The bridge was abandoned in 1963 following the opening of the new Shin-etsu Main Line tunnel.
Megane Bridge, or Usui No. 3 Bridge, is a massive brick arch bridge completed in 1892 as part of the now-defunct Shin-etsu Main Line. It stands 31 meters tall and 91 meters long, constructed using over two million red bricks. It served as a critical railway link through the Usui Pass until 1963, when a new line was established. The bridge is recognized as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It serves as a central feature of the Usui-toge Railway Cultural Village area. The structure is part of the 'Abt-no-michi' hiking trail, which follows the former railway route. Visitors can walk on the top of the bridge deck, which remains preserved. The design utilizes a unique arch-and-pier configuration to withstand the steep incline of the mountain pass.

Wear comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes as the path includes incline and uneven surfaces.
Bring a flashlight or headlamp if you plan to walk through the adjacent abandoned railway tunnels.
Pack water and snacks as there are limited facilities on the trail itself.
Do not attempt to walk through the tunnels without a light source or during dusk when visibility drops significantly.
The trail may be closed during winter months or following heavy rainfall due to safety concerns regarding tunnel stability.
Stay on marked paths, do not climb on the brick railings, and carry out all trash.
