Overview

The Meiji Utsunoya Tunnel is a historic brick-lined tunnel constructed in 1876 that served as a critical passage through the Utsunoya Pass. It was the first toll-based road tunnel in Japan and represents a significant engineering achievement of the Meiji period. The tunnel stretches 203 meters in length and features traditional European-style red brick masonry. It replaced a steep mountain path that had been part of the historic Tokaido route connecting Edo to Kyoto. In 1997, it was designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The tunnel was decommissioned for modern motor vehicle traffic, though pedestrians can still walk through its interior. The surrounding area remains a protected historical preservation district showcasing traditional Japanese village architecture.
