Overview

Sandanbeki Cave is a coastal sea cave located at the base of 50-meter-tall cliff faces in Shirahama, Wakayama. Visitors access the subterranean level by an elevator that descends 36 meters into the cavern system. The cave interior features paths that allow guests to observe waves crashing directly into the rock formations. Historically, the site served as a hideout for the Kumano Suigun, a group of maritime warriors known as the Kumano Navy during the Heian period. The cavern includes a reconstructed guard post and a shrine dedicated to Benzaiten. A cliffside observation deck above the cave provides panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the jagged coastline.
