Overview

Abuto Kannon, formally known as Bandai-ji, is a Zen Buddhist temple perched on the precipice of Abuto Cape overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. The main hall, a designated National Important Cultural Property, was constructed in 1570 by the warlord Mōri Terumoto. The structure is built on stilts directly over the rocky coastline, designed to appear as if it is floating above the water. Pilgrims traditionally visit to pray for safe voyages and healthy child delivery. The exterior features unique votive offerings of wooden paddles known as 'shakushi'. The temple grounds offer 360-degree views of the Seto Inland Sea and its surrounding islands. Its architectural design reflects the aesthetic of the Muromachi and early Momoyama periods. The narrow wooden veranda surrounding the hall serves as a viewing platform suspended over the sea cliffs.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with high-traction soles as the wooden walkways and stone steps can be slippery when damp.

Visit during low tide to better appreciate the unique stilted architecture of the foundation.

The surrounding cape area is narrow and prone to strong sea breezes, so bring a windbreaker.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to access the lower rocky cliff edges, as the terrain is unstable and unauthorized for public entry.

Etiquette

Remove shoes before entering the temple hall and maintain a quiet, respectful tone.
