Overview

Mount Cikuray is a non-active stratovolcano reaching an elevation of 2,821 meters above sea level. It is the fourth highest mountain in West Java and is recognized for its triangular-shaped summit. The peak is known for its sea of clouds phenomenon, typically visible in the early morning. Hikers generally access the summit through four primary basecamp trails: Pemancar, Kiara Janggot, Tapak Geundeu, and Dayeuh Manggung. The mountain is covered in sub-alpine vegetation near the top and denser montane forest at lower elevations. It is located in the Garut Regency, offering views of the surrounding Guntur, Papandayan, and Galunggung volcanoes. The summit area is limited in space, requiring early arrival for clear vantage points. Temperatures at the summit frequently drop below 10 degrees Celsius at night.

Insider tips

Bring a high-quality windbreaker and thermal base layers, as the summit is consistently cold and exposed to high winds.

Carry all necessary water supplies, as there are no natural water sources available once you begin the ascent.

Acclimatize in Garut for at least one night before beginning the trek to reduce the risk of altitude fatigue.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the hike during the peak rainy season, as the steep, muddy trails become dangerous and prone to landslides.

Good to know

Local authorities occasionally close the mountain for trekking during extreme weather or for scheduled forest conservation maintenance.

Etiquette

Hikers are expected to carry out all trash to minimize environmental impact on the volcanic ecosystem.
