Overview

The Snail Garden (Csiga-kert) is the oldest public park in Gyula, established in the early 19th century as part of the Almásy Mansion estate. It serves as a botanical bridge connecting the historic Gyula Castle with the modern Castle Baths. The park features an artificial island surrounded by a winding branch of the Élővíz-csatorna canal, which provides its unique snail-like layout. Many of the trees within the garden are protected species, some dating back over 150 years. Visitors can access the area via footbridges that cross the water channels surrounding the park. It functions as a public leisure space, maintaining remnants of the original English-style landscaping commissioned by the Wenckheim family. The park serves as a central green lung for the city, linking the cultural heritage of the castle grounds to recreational water facilities.
