Overview

The Majakivi-Pikanõmme nature trail is a 7-kilometer loop located within Lahemaa National Park in Northern Estonia. The trail highlights the transition between coastal landscapes and inland forested dunes, culminating at the massive Majakivi glacial erratic. Standing at 7 meters high with a circumference of 32 meters, Majakivi is one of the largest boulders in Estonia. The path features a wooden boardwalk section that traverses the diverse Viru bog environment. Visitors encounter a variety of habitats, including pine forests, dunes, and marshy wetlands. The trail is managed by the State Forest Management Centre (RMK) and maintains a series of markers to guide hikers through the varied terrain.

Insider tips

Wear waterproof hiking boots, as sections of the trail can be damp regardless of the season.

Bring insect repellent during the summer months to protect against mosquitoes and horseflies in the bog areas.

Carry a physical map or ensure your GPS is charged, as cellular reception can be intermittent in denser forest sections.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the full loop without adequate water and supplies, as there are no facilities or drinking water sources available once you depart the trailhead.

Etiquette

Stay strictly on the marked boardwalks and paths to protect the sensitive bog ecosystem; strictly no littering or campfires outside designated areas.
