Overview

Sant'Anastasia is the largest church in Verona, constructed by the Dominican Order between 1280 and 1400. It serves as a preeminent example of Italian Gothic architecture, characterized by its wide nave and distinctive ribbed vaulting. The interior houses Pisanello's celebrated fresco, Saint George and the Princess, a masterpiece of the International Gothic style. Visitors can see the two famous hunchback holy water stoups, carved from marble in the 16th century. The church features a facade that remained unfinished, exposing the brickwork and contrasting with the highly decorated interior. It serves as a repository for numerous 14th- and 15th-century frescoes and altarpieces, including works by Liberale da Verona and Girolamo dai Libri. The complex contains the remains of significant historical figures, including members of the Scaliger family.
