Overview

Monte Kaolino is a 150-meter-high artificial hill created from 35 million tons of quartz sand, a byproduct of kaolin mining. It features a summer luge track, or Monte Coaster, that descends the sand dune. Visitors can sandboard or ski down the slope throughout the year using specialized equipment. The site includes a heated outdoor swimming pool complex at the base. The total area covers approximately 120,000 square meters of white sand. It is located in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. The hill serves as a unique geological site where industrial waste has been repurposed into a recreational landscape.

Insider tips

Bring a change of clothes, as the fine white sand will get into shoes and pockets.

Wear long sleeves and pants if you plan to sandboard to avoid skin abrasions.

Check the wind conditions, as gusty weather can cause sand to blow across the lower sections.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb the steep face of the dune without proper footwear, as the loose sand makes footing difficult.

Good to know

The coaster and sandboarding operations are seasonal, typically closed during late autumn and winter months.

Etiquette

Standard recreational park rules; sandboarding equipment must be rented or approved for the specific surface texture.
