Overview

Pedra Longa is a 128-meter high limestone monolith rising directly out of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Baunei, Sardinia. It is a Natural Monument designated for its geological significance as an isolated spire formed by tectonic processes. The site serves as the starting point for the coastal trail toward the Cala Goloritzé area. The sheer white cliffs are composed of Jurassic limestone and reach depths of over 30 meters immediately offshore. The surrounding terrain is part of the Ogliastra region and is known for rugged karst landscapes. It is a primary destination for rock climbing, featuring multiple bolted routes directly on the spire. The site is accessible by a paved road leading down from the town of Baunei. Swimming is possible in the deep, crystalline waters adjacent to the rock base.

Insider tips

Wear water shoes, as the entry point into the sea consists of large rocks and pebbles.

Bring your own shade and hydration, as there is limited natural shelter directly at the base of the spire.

Visit during the shoulder season to avoid the high-density summer crowds and high temperatures.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim around the spire if sea conditions are windy, as currents can become unpredictable near the base.

Etiquette

Respect the climbing routes by not obstructing paths and adhere to 'leave no trace' principles in this natural area.
