Interesting facts
1

The name 'Chora' originates from the Greek word for 'country' or 'rural,' reflecting its original location outside the 4th-century Theodosian Walls.

2

The current structure is largely the result of a complete reconstruction ordered by Theodore Metochites, a Byzantine high official, between 1315 and 1321.

3

The mosaic of the 'Anastasis' (Resurrection) in the funerary chapel (parekklesion) is widely considered the masterpiece of Byzantine funerary art.

4

Theodora Raoulaina, a noblewoman and niece of Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos, played a pivotal role in the church's restoration in the 13th century.

5

During the Ottoman conversion in the early 16th century, the mosaics and frescoes were covered with plaster to comply with Islamic aniconism, which ironically helped preserve them from centuries of decay.

6

The complex contains a side chapel designed specifically for funerary rites, a departure from standard church layouts of the period.

7

The building survived the Great Fire of 1894 and significant earthquake damage in the 20th century before undergoing major international restoration projects.

8

The frescoes in the parekklesion represent the peak of the 'Palaiologan Renaissance,' characterized by fluid movement and emotional depth in human figures.

Overview

The Kariye Mosque, formerly known as the Chora Church, is a Byzantine-era structure located in the Edirnekapi neighborhood of Istanbul. It houses one of the most significant collections of Late Byzantine mosaics and frescoes in the world. Originally constructed as a church in the 4th century, it was converted into a mosque during the Ottoman period. After functioning as a secular museum for decades, the site was officially reverted to a mosque in 2020. The interior features intricate 14th-century Palaiologan Renaissance art depicting biblical narratives. The architecture includes a central dome and two narthexes decorated with extensive gold-leaf cycles of the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Following a lengthy period of extensive structural restoration, the building reopened to visitors in May 2024. It remains an active place of worship while maintaining its status as a site of historical art preservation.
