The shallow, eutrophic lake supports a rare population of vendace, a species of whitefish that represents a relic of the last Ice Age. Extensive reed beds and shoreline marshes provide essential nesting grounds for waterfowl and habitat for red squirrels. Visitors can access a network of boardwalks and elevated viewpoints specifically designed to monitor wildlife without disturbing sensitive ecosystems. The area is part of a larger catchment restoration project aimed at improving water quality and biodiversity within the Derwent valley.
The elevated bird hide overlooking the lake provides the clearest view of the water and surrounding raptor nesting sites.
Bring high-quality binoculars or a spotting scope to view osprey nests from the designated observation points.
Wear waterproof footwear, as the paths through the meadows and wetlands can become muddy or flooded during high water levels.
