Overview

Monumen Kapal Selam, or Monkasel, is a decommissioned Soviet-era Whiskey-class submarine preserved as a museum in the heart of Surabaya. The KRI Pasopati 410 served in the Indonesian Navy starting in 1962 before being retired and transformed into this landmark. Visitors can walk through the original internal compartments, including the torpedo rooms, command center, and sleeping quarters. The vessel is displayed in a purpose-built park setting along the banks of the Kalimas River. The site features an air-conditioned audiovisual room explaining the vessel's history and military significance. The facility also provides access to a children's play area and a small outdoor pool near the riverbank.

Insider tips

Climb through the hatches carefully, as the passageways are extremely narrow and feature low ceilings.

Visit during weekdays to avoid large school groups and weekend crowds, which can make maneuvering through the tight interior difficult.

Carry a small bag or wear a backpack on your front to avoid getting caught on interior equipment.

What to avoid

Avoid visiting during the peak heat of the day, as the interior of the metal hull can become very warm despite ventilation systems.

Etiquette

Remove hats or bulky accessories before entering the cramped submarine interior; maintain silence inside the command deck.
