The sculptures are nine meters tall, making them significantly larger than human scale.
The monument was commissioned as a gift from the Esbjerg municipality and local private contributors.
The figures are intentionally oriented to look out toward the North Sea horizon.
Svend Wiig Hansen intended the work to represent the innocent man meeting nature's elements.
The site is located near the boundary of the UNESCO-protected Wadden Sea National Park.
Men by the Sea (Mennesket ved Havet) consists of four nine-meter-tall white concrete sculptures depicting seated men looking out over the Wadden Sea. Designed by Svend Wiig Hansen, the monument was inaugurated in 1995 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Esbjerg becoming an independent municipality. The figures are visible from up to 10 kilometers away at sea due to their height and stark color. The sculptures represent the meeting between pure nature and man. They are situated on a hill at Sædding Strand, north of the Esbjerg city center. The structure is cast in white concrete and has become an iconic symbol of the region. As of June 2026, the sculptures remain open to the public without structural restrictions. The site is a popular destination for those interested in coastal art installations.
From the beach level looking upward toward the sculptures to emphasize their massive scale against the sky.
Visit during low tide to walk further out onto the tidal flats for a different perspective.
Bring wind-resistant clothing as the coastal location is subject to strong, constant breezes.
Combine your visit with a walk along the adjacent beach path towards the fishing harbor.
Do not attempt to climb or deface the concrete figures, as they are protected cultural landmarks.
