The keep stands approximately 30 meters tall with walls reaching 3 meters in thickness. It functioned as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Lemos, a powerful noble family in medieval Galicia. The current structures date primarily from the 13th to the 16th centuries, replacing older fortifications on the same site. Visitors can climb to the top of the tower for panoramic views of the Lemos Valley and the surrounding Ribeira Sacra region. The castle complex is integrated into a Parador hotel, which occupies the former Benedictine monastery.
