6

The site was historically integrated into a rural religious complex, evidenced by the 12th-century church nearby.

Overview

The Sacred Well of Santa Cristina is a remarkably preserved Nuragic-era subterranean temple constructed during the Middle Bronze Age, approximately 1000 BCE. The site is defined by its precise tholos (beehive) chamber and a monumental staircase composed of perfectly fitted, dry-stone volcanic basalt blocks. Its design incorporates advanced astronomical knowledge, as the well aligns with the lunar cycle every 18.6 years. The structure includes an external enclosure wall and a surrounding village of circular huts. Archaeologists identify this site as one of the most sophisticated expressions of Nuragic water worship architecture in Sardinia. The well is remarkably symmetrical, featuring a descending flight of 25 steps leading to the water level. Excavations have revealed votive offerings, confirming its function as a site of ritual pilgrimage and healing. The site is situated within a larger archaeological park that also contains a small Christian sanctuary dedicated to Saint Christina.

Insider tips

Wear shoes with excellent grip, as the ancient basalt steps can be uneven and slippery.

Visit the church and the village ruins adjacent to the well to fully contextualize the site's multi-era history.

Bring a hat and sunscreen, as the archaeological park offers very little shade.

What to avoid

Avoid touching the basalt stones, as oils from human skin can accelerate the weathering of the porous volcanic rock.

Etiquette

Maintain a respectful silence as the site is considered a place of historical and spiritual significance; do not climb on the protected dry-stone walls.
