Overview

No. 69 Kannon-ji is a temple on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, uniquely sharing its grounds with the No. 68 Jinne-in Temple. The site is famous for the Kotohiki Park sand art, known as Zenigata Sunae, located on the coast below the temple plateau. Its main hall, the Kannon-do, is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The temple grounds contain a stone monument dedicated to the haiku poet Matsuo Basho. Pilgrims visit this site as part of the Kagawa Prefecture leg of the 88-temple circuit. The temple was historically associated with the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Its architecture reflects traditional Edo-period design elements common to regional pilgrimage sites.
