Interesting facts
1

The lake's acidity (pH) fluctuates between 0.5 and 1.3, which is high enough to dissolve organic matter rapidly.

2

The crater was discovered by Dutch botanist Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn in 1837, who initially believed the area was haunted due to the absence of birds in the vicinity.

3

The name 'Kawah Putih' translates directly to 'White Crater' in Indonesian, referring to the color of the sulfur deposits.

4

The lake level and color are not static and shift based on volcanic activity and rainfall amounts.

5

The region was historically a center for sulfur mining during the colonial period.

Overview

Kawah Putih is a volcanic crater lake situated at an elevation of approximately 2,430 meters above sea level in the Patuha Mountain range. The water displays a distinct turquoise-to-white color due to its high sulfur content and varying acidity levels. The lake formed following a massive eruption of Mount Patuha in the 10th century. The surrounding landscape features a sparse, white, volcanic soil basin contrasted by dense, mossy forest growth on the rim. The crater is part of a larger geothermal zone in the Bandung Regency of West Java. High sulfur concentrations create a pungent odor that intensifies near the water's edge. The temperature in this highland area remains significantly lower than in the surrounding plains of West Java.

Insider tips

Bring a high-quality protective mask to mitigate the strong sulfur fumes.

Wear a light jacket or windbreaker as the high elevation results in chilly, misty conditions.

Stay on designated walking paths as the ground near the shore can be unstable or slippery.

What to avoid

Do not wander off the marked trails into the surrounding forest, as the terrain is steep and prone to volcanic gas pockets.

Etiquette

Avoid touching the lake water as its high acidity can cause skin irritation or chemical burns.
