Overview

Izvorul Bigăr is a unique waterfall in the Anina Mountains where the Bigăr spring emerges from a cave and cascades over a circular, moss-covered tufa cliff into the Minis River. The waterfall is located within the Cheile Nerei-Beușnița National Park in Romania. In 2021, a significant portion of the tufa formation collapsed due to natural erosion, fundamentally altering the waterfall's appearance. The site remains a protected nature reserve featuring a diverse ecosystem of bryophytes and aquatic plants. The spring itself originates from a deep karst aquifer before reaching the surface. Visitors can observe the waterfall directly from the road side where the stream meets the river. It is situated along the 57B national road, which runs through the Nera Gorges valley. The site is characterized by its high humidity and limestone geology.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with high traction as the path near the waterfall can be extremely slippery due to constant spray.

Bring a waterproof cover for camera equipment to protect against high humidity near the falls.

Visit on a weekday to avoid congestion, as the road-side parking area is limited.

What to avoid

Do not expect to see the exact mushroom-shaped structure depicted in older travel brochures, as the site morphology changed significantly in 2021.

Etiquette

Stay behind the designated wooden safety barriers; do not attempt to climb or touch the mossy tufa formation to preserve its delicate structure.
