Overview

Medininkai Castle is the largest enclosure-type castle in Lithuania, covering an area of 6.5 hectares. The structure consists of a defensive perimeter wall with four towers and was originally built in the 14th century to protect the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It is managed by the Trakai Island Castle Museum. The main 30-meter-high Donjon tower has been restored and houses a multi-level exhibition on the history of the castle and the Teutonic Order's military campaigns. The inner courtyard remains an open space where historical reenactments and festivals are frequently staged. Its strategic location near the Belarusian border highlights its historical role as a frontier fortification. The stone and brick masonry is characteristic of medieval Lithuanian defensive architecture.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for climbing the steep, narrow wooden stairs within the Donjon tower.

Bring a light jacket as the stone interiors remain cool even during summer months.

Combine your visit with a trip to the nearby Juozapinė Hill, the highest point in Lithuania.

What to avoid

Do not expect a fully furnished medieval interior; the castle is primarily an architectural site and exhibition space rather than a reconstructed period home.
