Overview

Anrakuji, commonly known as Yoshimi Kannon, is a Buddhist temple belonging to the Shingon sect, founded in the early 9th century by the monk Ennin. The temple complex is renowned for its three-story pagoda, which was reconstructed in the Edo period and is designated as a cultural asset of Saitama Prefecture. The main hall, or Kannon-do, houses a statue of Kannon Bosatsu, the deity of mercy, to whom the temple is dedicated. The site is situated on a hillside in the Yoshimi hills, providing a unique vantage point over the surrounding rural landscape. Historically, the temple grounds were integrated into the landscape of the nearby Yoshimi Hyakuana, or the One Hundred Caves of Yoshimi. The temple architecture exhibits traditional wooden joinery techniques characteristic of the late Edo era.
