Overview

Hamheodongcheon Valley is a forested natural area located on the southern slopes of Mani-san mountain on Ganghwa Island. The name refers to the clear stream that flows over large granite slabs, historically known as a place where Buddhist monks could contemplate the sky through the reflections in the water. It serves primarily as a popular gateway for hikers ascending to the peak of Mani-san. The valley features a well-developed camping infrastructure embedded within the natural forest landscape. The trail path is characterized by large, smooth rock formations and surrounding seasonal foliage. It is an officially designated public recreation area managed by the local government.

Insider tips

Wear hiking boots with high-grip soles as the granite rock surfaces can be extremely slippery when damp.

If you are camping, bring a portable trolley or backpack as the terrain is sloped and requires carrying equipment from the parking area.

Pack layered clothing, as the temperature drop at the mountain base is significant compared to the rest of Ganghwa Island.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to hike to the summit in standard street shoes or sandals.

Good to know

The valley and campsite may be subject to temporary closures during high fire-risk seasons or extreme weather conditions.

Etiquette

Strictly no littering; all waste must be removed by visitors. Open flames are prohibited outside of designated camping fire pits.
