Overview

Bukit Malawati, or Malawati Hill, served as the administrative center and royal stronghold for the Selangor Sultanate in the 18th and 19th centuries. The site features the ruins of a fortress originally built during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim to defend against Dutch colonial forces. Visitors can view the remnants of the royal palace, including foundation stones and defensive cannons. The area contains the royal mausoleum, which houses the graves of the first three Sultans of Selangor. A lighthouse, constructed in the early 20th century, remains functional and sits atop the hill. The hill is inhabited by a population of silvered leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques that are accustomed to human presence. Panoramic views of the Selangor coastline and the Malacca Strait are visible from the peak. Historical artifacts, such as execution blocks and cannons, are preserved across the grounds.

Insider tips

Bring a bag of long beans or peanuts to feed the silvered leaf monkeys, which are generally more docile than the macaques.

Wear comfortable walking shoes as the terrain includes some inclines and historical pathways.

Apply insect repellent, as the forested area can have mosquitoes.

What to avoid

Do not carry plastic bags openly, as the monkeys may mistake them for food and attempt to snatch them.

Etiquette

Maintain a respectful distance from the royal tombs and avoid loud behavior in burial areas.
