Overview

Uppali Burj, also known as Hyder Burj, is a 16th-century cylindrical watchtower situated on the northern ramparts of Vijayapura. Built by Hyder Khan, a general under Ibrahim Adil Shah II, the structure stands 24 meters high and is constructed primarily of masonry. A winding stone staircase leads visitors to the summit, which offers an elevated vantage point over the city. The tower houses two massive cannons, once used for defensive military purposes. The walls feature circular apertures designed for surveillance and artillery placement. As one of the few remaining accessible bastions of the Adil Shahi fortifications, it remains a primary example of medieval Deccan defensive architecture.

Visit during the late afternoon to experience the cooling breeze on the summit.

Bring a flashlight to better examine the interior masonry and staircase transition zones.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the tower if you have mobility issues or a fear of heights, as the stairs are narrow and uneven.
