Overview

Whitaker Ponds Nature Park is a 15-acre urban wetlands site located in the Columbia Slough watershed. The park features a loop trail around two ponds that serve as critical habitat for local wildlife, including western painted turtles and nesting great blue herons. It is managed by Portland Parks & Recreation in partnership with the Columbia Slough Watershed Council. The landscape consists of restored riparian forest and open water areas designed for environmental education. Native plant species predominate throughout the site to support local biodiversity. The park is integrated into a larger corridor of greenspaces along the Columbia Slough.

Photo spot

The viewing platform overlooking the larger pond provides the clearest vantage point for water birds and turtles.

Insider tips

Bring binoculars as the dense vegetation makes spotting waterfowl easier from a distance.

Wear waterproof footwear during the rainy season, as sections of the trail can become muddy.

Stay on marked paths to avoid disturbing sensitive nesting areas near the water's edge.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to feed the wildlife or enter the water, as the ponds contain steep, unstable banks and sensitive habitats.

Etiquette

Keep dogs on a leash at all times; pack out all trash to protect the fragile wetland ecosystem.
