Overview

Bitoujiao Scenic Area features a 3.5-kilometer hiking trail that follows a dramatic coastline of basalt and sandstone cliffs. The trail connects Bitou Village, the lighthouse, and the elementary school, showcasing coastal erosion formations like mushroom rocks and honeycomb weathering. The area serves as a significant geological site within the Northeast Coast National Scenic Area of Taiwan. Much of the trail consists of elevated stone steps that traverse the ridge line between the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea. Vegetation in the area is characterized by wind-sheared shrubs and salt-tolerant coastal grasses. The terrain is notably rugged, with steep inclines and high exposure to maritime weather conditions.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker even in summer, as the ridge is constantly exposed to strong maritime gusts.

Carry at least one liter of water, as there are no shops or vendors once you begin the main trail segments.

Apply sunscreen liberally; the trail offers virtually no shade for the duration of the hike.

What to avoid

Attempting the trail during or immediately following heavy rainfall, as the steps become extremely slippery and the cliffs are prone to minor rockfalls.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to avoid unstable cliff edges and protect fragile coastal vegetation.
