Interesting facts
1

The bridge was inspired by Nepalese three-rope bridges, adapted for modern safety standards.

2

The Trift Glacier has retreated significantly over the last century, necessitating the bridge's construction to maintain trail connectivity.

3

The cable car used to access the site was originally built to transport workers to the Trift dam construction site.

4

The bridge is designed to withstand high-altitude wind speeds reaching up to 200 kilometers per hour.

5

The bridge deck consists of galvanized steel grating to allow wind to pass through rather than creating aerodynamic resistance.

Overview

Triftbrücke is one of the longest and highest pedestrian suspension bridges in the Alps, spanning 170 meters at an altitude of 100 meters above the Triftsee. The current structure, completed in 2009, replaced an original bridge built in 2004 that was deemed too unstable for sustained high-altitude wind conditions. It provides direct views of the receding Trift Glacier and the glacial lake formed by the ice melt. Access requires a ride on the Triftbahn, a former construction cable car converted for tourist use. The bridge serves as a primary access point for hikers traversing the path toward the SAC Windegg hut. The surrounding region is part of the Grimselwelt hydro-power development area in the Bernese Oberland.

Insider tips

Bring a windproof jacket as temperatures drop significantly near the glacier, even in summer.

Wear sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with good grip for the rocky terrain between the cable car and the bridge.

Book your cable car slot well in advance online, as capacity is strictly limited and sell-outs are frequent.

What to avoid

Attempting the hike without adequate footwear or arriving without a pre-booked cable car reservation.

Good to know

Open only during the summer season; closed throughout the winter and shoulder months due to snow and avalanche danger.

Etiquette

Avoid crossing in groups of more than five people at once; adhere to local signage regarding one-way crossing if signaled.
