Overview

Molecule Man is a set of three interconnected aluminum sculptures standing 30 meters high in the River Spree. Created by American artist Jonathan Borofsky, the statues feature hundreds of circular perforations representing the molecules of all human beings. The figures appear to be leaning toward one another, symbolizing the meeting of the three city districts of Treptow, Kreuzberg, and Friedrichshain. The sculpture is anchored into the riverbed to withstand the water's current. It was installed in 1999 to mark the border between the formerly divided East and West Berlin. The sculpture serves as an iconic example of public art integrated into Berlin's industrial waterfront landscape.
