Overview

Savana Bekol is a prominent 300-hectare tropical savanna located within Baluran National Park in East Java. The landscape is characterized by open grasslands framed by the silhouette of the extinct Mount Baluran volcano. It functions as a primary grazing area for wild Javan banteng, deer, and long-tailed macaques. During the dry season, the vegetation turns golden-brown, creating a stark contrast with the nearby coastal forests. The area is a centerpiece of the park's dry forest ecosystem, which receives significantly less annual rainfall than surrounding regions. It remains one of the few places in Indonesia where large herds of wild herbivores can be observed in their natural habitat.

Photo spot

The raised viewing tower at the edge of the savanna provides an elevated perspective of the grassland and the mountain backdrop.

Insider tips

Bring high-powered binoculars for wildlife spotting, as animals often maintain a significant distance from designated paths.

Carry sufficient drinking water, as there are no facilities available within the savanna area.

Apply sunscreen and wear a hat, as there is almost no natural shade in the open grassland.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk off-trail into the tall grass, as there are risks of encountering wildlife or hidden uneven terrain.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet demeanor to avoid startling the wildlife; do not feed or approach the animals; remain on designated tracks.
