Overview

Under the Splashes of the Waterfall is an ecotrail located in the Balkan Mountains near the town of Teteven, Bulgaria. The trail follows the course of the Plaznicka River, leading visitors toward the Skoka Waterfall. The path features a series of wooden bridges and staircases that traverse the riverbank and steep rocky terrain. The trail is noted for its high humidity and moss-covered landscape, which creates a microclimate distinct from the surrounding forest. Visitors cross the river multiple times via narrow bridges during the ascent. The route reaches its terminus at the base of the waterfall, where the water cascades down from approximately 20 meters. The surrounding forest consists primarily of beech and coniferous trees typical of the Central Balkan National Park region.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with high-traction soles, as the wooden walkways and stone steps become extremely slippery when wet.

Bring a light waterproof shell or jacket to protect against constant spray near the waterfall basin.

Carry a walking pole if you have concerns about balance on steep, uneven terrain.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the rocks surrounding the waterfall, as they are loose and constantly damp from spray.

Good to know

Best visited between May and October; trails may be hazardous or inaccessible during winter freeze and heavy snow cycles.

Etiquette
