Overview

Azuchi Castle was commissioned by Oda Nobunaga in 1576 as the first Japanese castle to feature a central keep with a seven-story exterior. The structure was destroyed by fire in 1582, just three years after its completion, shortly after Nobunaga’s assassination at Honno-ji. Today, the site remains as an archaeological ruin atop Mount Azuchi, featuring the original stone foundations and a path of stone stairs. The ruins are characterized by the Ote-michi, a wide, straight road that serves as a precursor to modern castle design. Excavations have revealed the layout of the former palatial residence and surrounding samurai quarters. The site is designated as a Special Historic Site of Japan.
