Overview

Amdavad Ni Gufa is a subterranean art gallery designed through a collaboration between architect B.V. Doshi and artist M.F. Husain. The structure utilizes computer-aided design to create a series of interconnected, bubble-like chambers covered by a mound of earth. The shell is made of thin reinforced concrete, partially buried to regulate internal temperatures naturally. Interior walls feature mosaic tiles and serve as a canvas for M.F. Husain’s mural paintings. The space lacks traditional vertical walls, with the floor curving into the ceiling. Circular glass portholes act as skylights, allowing irregular beams of natural light to reach the subterranean floor. The gallery is situated on the CEPT University campus. It is widely recognized as a fusion of modern engineering and organic, cave-like aesthetics.
