Overview

Meoto Iwa, or the Wedded Rocks, consists of two sea rocks connected by a sacred shimenawa rope, located off the shore of Futami in Ise, Mie Prefecture. The larger rock represents the husband and the smaller the wife, together symbolizing the union of a married couple. The rocks are part of the grounds of the Futami Okitama Shrine. The shimenawa rope, which weighs approximately one ton, is replaced in a formal ceremony three times a year. The site is historically significant as a place where worshippers performed purification rites before visiting the Grand Shrine of Ise. The rocks are situated in Ise Bay, facing the sunrise. During the summer solstice, the sun rises directly between the two rocks. The area is also famous for the statues of frogs found throughout the shrine, representing the return of good luck.

Do not attempt to walk out to the rocks or swim in the immediate area, as it is prohibited and dangerous.

Good to know
