Overview

Shiraito Waterfall is a 24-meter-tall cascade located in the mountainous region of Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture. The waterfall is designated as a Prefectural Scenic Spot. The water flows down a series of tiered rock faces, creating a white-thread appearance that gives the site its name. The surrounding area features forested slopes planted with over 100,000 hydrangea bushes that bloom in early summer. Visitors can engage in yamame trout fishing in the designated stream zones near the base. On-site facilities include a dining area serving nagashi-somen (flowing noodles) during the warmer months. The site is maintained by the local Shiraito Waterfall Preservation Society. The waterfall is situated at an elevation of approximately 530 meters, providing a cooler climate than the surrounding coastal plains.

Photo spot

The wooden footbridge spanning the stream provides the most unobstructed frontal view of the entire waterfall height.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with good traction as the stone steps and paths around the waterfall can be slippery due to mist.

Bring a light jacket, as the mountain elevation results in temperatures several degrees lower than in downtown Fukuoka.

Plan for extra time if visiting during the hydrangea season, as the site experiences higher visitor density and limited parking.

What to avoid

Attempting to swim in the waterfall basin is strictly prohibited for safety reasons.

Good to know

Nagashi-somen dining is seasonal and typically available only from spring through early autumn.

Etiquette

Maintain noise levels respectful of the natural environment and use designated disposal areas for any trash, especially after eating on-site.
