Overview

The Velký Lopeník lookout tower is a 22-meter-tall wooden structure situated on the ridge of the White Carpathians, directly on the border between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It serves as a symbol of Czech-Slovak friendship, replacing an original tower that collapsed in 1972. The current structure, opened in 2005, is built from larch and oak wood on a stone base. It features an observation deck at a height of 19 meters, accessible via an internal staircase. From the top, the tower offers 360-degree views covering the Považský Inovec and Myjavská pahorkatina ranges in Slovakia and the Chřiby highlands in the Czech Republic. The tower is managed and maintained by the local municipality of Lopeník and the surrounding border communities. The surrounding area is part of the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. It remains one of the most significant wooden watchtowers in the Moravian-Slovak borderland.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy hiking boots as the paths leading to the summit can be muddy and uneven.

Bring wind-resistant clothing, as the open platform is significantly colder and windier than the surrounding forest floor.

Check weather forecasts specifically for the Lopeník ridge, as fog frequently obscures visibility even when the valley is clear.

What to avoid

Attempting to reach the tower in severe weather, as the wooden structure and surrounding mountain paths are prone to lightning and high wind hazards.

Good to know

Open year-round, but access may be restricted during extreme winter weather or heavy ice accumulation.
