Overview

Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve is a 41-acre urban wilderness area located on the north shore of Muskegon Lake. The preserve protects diverse habitats including wetlands, hardwood forests, and frontage along Muskegon Lake. A trail system traverses through varying terrain, providing elevated views of the water and access to lowland marsh ecosystems. This area serves as a critical stopover site for migratory birds traveling along the Lake Michigan flyway. It is managed by the Land Conservancy of West Michigan to restore native plant populations and improve local water quality. The terrain includes a steep bluff and lowland trails, offering varied hiking experiences within city limits.

Insider tips

Wear waterproof hiking boots, as lower trail sections are frequently muddy or submerged after rain.

Bring binoculars, as the varied micro-habitats make this a high-yield location for birdwatchers.

Check for ticks and wear long pants, as the trail can be overgrown in mid-summer.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk the lower marsh trails during or immediately following heavy rainfall as they become impassable.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect sensitive wetland vegetation; carry out all trash; dogs must be leashed.
