Overview

Khajjiar is a high-altitude meadow in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,920 meters above sea level. It is characterized by a central natural lake surrounded by a saucer-shaped grassy plateau and dense deodar cedar forests. The site earned its 'Mini Switzerland' moniker in 1992 when Willy T. Blazer, Vice Counselor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland, designated it as a topographically similar region. The plateau features a small, floating island that moves based on wind direction, caused by the accumulation of weeds and organic matter. It sits within the Kalatop Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary, which provides habitat for Himalayan black bears and barking deer. The Khajji Nag Temple, an ancient wooden structure dedicated to the serpent deity, is located directly adjacent to the meadow. The landscape is a mix of alpine pastures and coniferous forest cover. It remains a major transit point for trekkers traveling between Dalhousie and Chamba.
