Overview

The Datunshan Trail is a primary hiking route located within Yangmingshan National Park, known for its steep ascent to the 1,092-meter summit of Datun Main Peak. The trail is characterized by its volcanic geological features and expansive views overlooking the Taipei Basin and the North Coast. It forms part of the Datun Volcano Group, an area defined by dormant andesitic lava domes. The path is predominantly comprised of stone steps that lead hikers through tall Miscanthus grass fields. Because of its high elevation, the peak is frequently subjected to rapid weather shifts and dense fog. The trail serves as a connection point to neighboring peaks such as Datun West and South Peaks.

Insider tips

Bring a windproof jacket even in summer due to the consistent high-altitude gusts at the summit.

Wear sturdy, high-traction hiking footwear as the stone steps can be extremely slippery when wet.

Carry at least one liter of water per person as there are no natural water sources or vending stations on the upper trail.

What to avoid

Attempting the ascent during typhoon season or heavy rain, as the trail becomes hazardous.

Etiquette
