Overview

The Parc naturel régional des Préalpes d'Azur is a protected area covering 48,000 hectares between the Mediterranean coast and the high Alps. It spans 47 municipalities, encompassing diverse ecosystems ranging from Mediterranean scrubland to high-altitude limestone plateaus. The park is characterized by dramatic karst topography, including deep canyons like the Gorges du Loup and the Clue d'Aiglun. It hosts a significant network of long-distance hiking trails, including parts of the GR4 and GR51. The landscape contains prehistoric sites, most notably the numerous caves and archaeological findings near Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey. Agriculture in the region is defined by lavender fields, olive groves, and transhumance traditions. It is a refuge for rare biodiversity, including the Bonelli's eagle and the European wolf. The park acts as a transition zone, physically and climatically separating the French Riviera from the Southern Alps.

Insider tips

Download offline topographical maps, as cellular service is intermittent or non-existent in deep valleys.

Carry at least two liters of water per person, as natural water sources can dry up during summer months.

Visit local village markets for regional cheeses and lavender-based products to support the local economy.

What to avoid

Do not attempt strenuous high-altitude trails during midday in July and August due to intense heat and lack of tree cover.

Good to know

Trail access may be restricted during high-wind or high-fire-risk days in the summer; always check local 'Prévention Incendie' maps before heading out.

Etiquette

Respect private farmland boundaries, do not pick protected wildflowers, and adhere strictly to 'Leave No Trace' principles regarding waste.
