Overview

Santuario di Montecastello is a 17th-century sanctuary perched on a rocky spur 700 meters above Lake Garda. The current structure stands on the ruins of a 13th-century temple and an earlier castle, from which the name Montecastello derives. It is dedicated to the Madonna della Stella, commemorating a 12th-century apparition. The interior features a significant fresco cycle attributed to the school of Giotto and a large wooden altar carved in the 17th century. The site offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the lake, the Monte Baldo range, and the surrounding Tignale plateau. It serves as a pilgrimage site and remains an active religious destination. The location is accessed via a trail starting from the village of Tignale or via a narrow road for vehicles.

The external terrace and balcony area offer an unobstructed vertical view down to the lake and surrounding mountains.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker, as the elevated location on the cliffside is often significantly windier than the lake shore.

Wear sturdy walking shoes if arriving on foot, as the final approach involves steep, uneven terrain.

Combine the visit with a walk through the nearby olive groves of Tignale, known for high-quality, cold-pressed DOP oil.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the narrow approach road in a large camper van or motorhome; use the designated parking areas in Tignale.

Good to know

The site is typically closed during the winter months, reopening in late spring.

Etiquette

Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is expected; maintain silence as it is a place of active prayer.
