Overview

Hamsilos Nature Park is a unique ria—a submerged river valley—located on the northernmost tip of the Anatolian peninsula in Sinop, Turkey. It is geologically distinct as one of the few examples of a ria formation in the Black Sea region, resembling a fjord. The area features a narrow, winding inlet that penetrates deep into the verdant, tree-covered coastline. The park encompasses both the protected wetland of the Hamsilos Bay and the surrounding Akliman region. Freshwater from the surrounding forests mixes with the Black Sea, creating a diverse ecosystem that supports a wide variety of migratory birds and endemic plant species. The park provides designated walking paths that follow the contours of the bay, leading through dense woods and open coastal meadows. It is managed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry as a protected status area to preserve its ecological integrity.

Insider tips

Bring insect repellent as the dense vegetation and wetland areas attract mosquitoes, especially in late afternoon.

Wear closed-toe hiking shoes rather than sandals to comfortably navigate the uneven, root-heavy dirt trails.

Visit during the shoulder seasons to avoid the localized crowds that gather during peak Turkish summer holidays.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim in the narrow, stagnant-looking sections of the inner bay, as currents and water quality vary significantly from the open sea.

Good to know

The park remains accessible throughout the year, but facilities and trail maintenance are reduced during the winter months.

Etiquette

Remain on designated paths to protect the sensitive wetland ecosystem; refrain from littering, as waste collection is limited in this remote area.
