Interesting facts
1

The name 'Bukit Cinta' translates to 'Love Hill,' a moniker derived from local folklore regarding a mythical romance involving the ancestors of the Tenggerese people.

2

The site sits on the outer rim of the Tengger Caldera, a massive volcanic crater formed from the collapse of an ancient mountain complex.

3

Unlike the higher Penanjakan Peak, Bukit Cinta offers a slightly different viewing angle that frames Mount Batok more symmetrically against the caldera wall.

4

The area is primarily composed of volcanic ash and loose, sandy soil, common to the Tengger massif.

Overview

Bukit Cinta is a designated viewpoint located on the rim of the Tengger Caldera, offering a panoramic perspective of Mount Bromo, Mount Batok, and the active Mount Semeru. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,680 meters, it serves as an alternative vantage point to the more crowded Penanjakan 1. The site is accessible via the main road leading through the village of Wonokitri in the Pasuruan Regency. It features a hardened concrete viewing platform equipped with guardrails for visitor safety. On clear days, the location provides an unobstructed view of the 'Sea of Sand' (Lautan Pasir) below. The site is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park infrastructure. Due to the high altitude, temperatures often drop significantly below 10 degrees Celsius before dawn.

Insider tips

Wear high-quality thermal layers and a windproof jacket, as the wind chill factor is significant at this altitude.

Bring a tripod for long-exposure photography, as the pre-dawn lighting is extremely low.

Acclimatize briefly at the parking area before walking to the viewing platform to avoid lightheadedness.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to reach the viewpoint in a standard city car; the terrain and steep inclines require a 4WD vehicle or an official local motorbike taxi.

Etiquette

Maintain silence to respect the spiritual significance of the Tengger Caldera to local inhabitants; carry out all trash.
