Insider tips

Check the NC Parks website for real-time water quality alerts before planning a swimming excursion.

Bring bug spray, as the humid, forested environment near the lake supports high tick and mosquito populations.

Reserve campsites months in advance during peak summer months, as sites fill up rapidly on weekends.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim in areas not marked as designated beaches, as submerged stumps and changing water depths pose safety hazards.

Good to know

Select campgrounds operate on a seasonal basis; some access areas close for the winter months.

Etiquette

Leash pets at all times in all areas; remove all trash to follow Leave No Trace principles; observe swimming area boundaries.
