Overview

Takiyama Castle Ruins is a prominent Sengoku-period mountain castle site located on a ridge overlooking the Tama River in Hachiōji. Built in 1521 by Ōishi Sadahisa, the fortress was strategically designed with sophisticated defensive earthworks including deep trenches and carved-out earth bridges known as dorui. The site was famously defended by Hōjō Ujiteru before the castle was abandoned following the construction of Hachiōji Castle in 1587. It is designated as a National Historic Site and serves as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles. The remnants of the Honmaru (main enclosure) and secondary baileys remain as distinct earthen formations today. The site features significant military topography that demonstrates late 16th-century Japanese fortification techniques. Extensive hiking trails wind through the woodland to connect the various historical enclosures.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, non-slip hiking footwear as the terrain consists of unpaved, uneven forest trails.

Bring insect repellent during the summer months due to the dense forest coverage.

Download a digital map of the castle layout beforehand, as signage inside the forest can be sparse.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the steep embankments or trenches, as they are fragile historical artifacts and physically hazardous.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile earthen embankments from erosion; pack out all trash.
